3rd Grade
Collecting Samples:
Throughout the year I will be collecting samples of students' abilities in basic skills like drawing, cutting, and control of media. This is my way of collecting data and having a set of samples to use to document growth. To make the most of our time, I make sure that each activity directly relates to the learning taking place during Art time. These exercises are a great transition between lessons, and it also allows me to plan a "buffer" day in between lessons since all students finish at their own speed.

#1: Expressive Portraits
For the first project of the year, I decided to try something new with the kids. Since I have so many new students after the redistricting, I wanted to use art as a way to get to know them. This new lesson is easily one of my favorites. The kids came up with a clever "I am..." statement and created a mixed media background that represented their idea. One-by-one I photographed the students as they posed in a way that matched their idea. Black and white photocopies were made and glued onto the background. They look awesome. I don't post photographs on the website, so I can't include images of this lesson. Trust me when I say that you'll love it!
